Fighting together against cervical cancer

On July 13th, 2026, Cabrini Ministry of Ethiopia and St. Mary Hospital Outreach Teams traveled to Achura Kebele, a small village in Boloso Sore District, Ethiopia, to provide critical cervical cancer screening and treatment services at the local health post, continuing their fight against this global killer.

During the event, Ms. Alemtsehay Leulseged, Health Officer, Community Outreach and School Project Focal Person from St. Mary Hospital raised awareness to the gathered women and caretakers. More than one hundred mothers and caretakers received health education focusing on understanding cervical cancer and its symptoms, the importance of early detection and the complications it can cause. Flyers and leaflets explaining cervical cancer in the local language were distributed to the participants.

Ms. Tamenech Tadesse, St. Mary Hospital Cervical Cancer Focal Person conducted free screening to thirty women: four were found to be positive and received immediate treatment.

Additionally, Mr. Tariku Yohannes,Health Officer and Community Case Worker at Cabrini Ministries Ethiopia provided education on female genital mutilation and how to prepare nutritious meals to prevent malnutrition.

Participants benefited greatly from the free cervical cancer screening and treatment, as well as from the cooking demonstration for malnutrition prevention, and they commented that this encouraging and promising activity should be strengthened and continued for the community in the future.

Stella Maris, one of the girls preparing to become a Missionary Sister of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, also joined the visit and expressed her deep happiness at being part of this collaborative effort.
