Understanding identity
On July 21st, 2026, Heart Ministries in Dzaipi, Uganda, held a formation meeting to reflect on the meaning of identity, both as individuals and as an organization.
The meeting emphasized that identity is not a fixed label but rather a continuous process of how we perceive, define and know ourselves across different time frames, and how we make sense of our own stories.
Identity helps us answer questions of who we are, what is important for us, what sets us apart from others, and what kind of life makes sense for us to live. This discussion challenged the team deeply to think about who they are, what they stand for, and how their values shape the way they serve others.
At the Personal Level, identity is about specific and unique traits that defines who we are: our values, beliefs, strengths, purpose, goals, and principles that guide our decisions and actions. The team was invited to reflected on factors that shapes their personal identity such as families they come from, educational background, friends they associate with, hobbies and interests, life experience, religion, culture and tradition. They also had a further elaboration on why personal identity is very important; and this included, building ones’ self-confidence and sense of belonging as we get to know their SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threats), hence become less insecure. It also foster inter personal relationships and respect for one another as they help understand that everyone is struggling to identify themselves as we too are.
At organizational level, identity goes beyond the name or logo. It is defined by our vision, mission, core values and the culture we create together. An organization’s identity is reflected by how it treats people, delivers service and remains faithful to its purpose. A strong organizational identity builds trust, accountability, unity, integrity, zeal and commitment among staffs, partner and the community we serve.
The session emphasized that personal identity and organizational identity are closely connected. When individuals understand and live by positive values, they strengthen the organization. Likewise, a strong organizational identity inspires staffs to work with dedication, professionalism and a shared sense of purpose.
As they move forward, staff are encouraged to continue reflecting on their identity, embrace their responsibilities and contributing meaningfully to achieve the organizational mission which is “sharing the love of Jesus in the spirit of St. Francis Xavior Cabrini to all, through comprehensive, integrated human promotion to the most vulnerable among the refugees and host communities”. By remaining true to their values, they can create lasting positive change in the lives of those who we serve.
As mother Cabrini reminds us, “The world is too small for what we intend to do”. May the staff at Heart Ministries continue to embrace their identity with courage, faith and a spirit of service, trusting that through unity and commitment, they can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
