Day 4
On Thursday, July 31st, our spiritual journey led us to the serene and historically rich town of Assisi. This day was filled with visits to sacred sites that hold significant importance in the history of our Catholic faith. Below is a detailed account of our experiences throughout this memorable day.
Our first stop was St. Damiano, the first monastery of St. Clare. This is where St. Clare, a beloved Clare, spent much of her life and where she eventually passed away. Walking through the monastery, we could almost feel the presence of the saintly community that once lived and prayed within its walls. The atmosphere was filled with a sense of peace and spirituality, reminding us of the enduring legacy of St. Clare's faith and dedication.
Next on our pilgrimage was the Church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. This impressive church is not only architecturally stunning but also holds a deep historical significance for the town of Assisi. Originally built on the foundations of a Roman temple dedicated to Minerva, the church stands as a testament to the layers of history that have shaped this sacred town. Its richly adorned interior and storied past offered us a glimpse into the profound transformation of Assisi over the centuries.
Our journey continued to the Cathedral of St. Rufino, where we had the unique opportunity to see the heart of Blessed Carlo Acutis, a modern-day beatified young man known for his deep faith and passion for the Eucharist. His heart, exhibited within the cathedral, serves as an inspiration to many, reminding us of the power of faith in the contemporary world. We also visited his tomb located in the Church of St. Mary Major.
Our pilgrimage would not have been complete without visiting the resting places of Assisi's most renowned saints, St. Clare and St. Francis. At the Basilica of St. Clare, we paid our respects at her tomb, reflecting on her life of humility and dedication to God. Similarly, the Papal Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi provided a moving experience as we visited the tomb of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals and the environment, who continues to inspire countless people around the world with his message of peace and love.
In conclusion, our day in Assisi was a profound experience of spiritual enrichment and historical exploration. Each site we visited offered a unique perspective on the lives and legacies of these extraordinary figures, deepening our understanding of their impact on the world. As we departed Assisi, we carried with us a renewed sense of faith and a deeper connection to the rich history of this sacred town.
