Improving the way we serve

Cabrini Ministries Eswatini hosted a staff training on compassionate service delivery facilitated by the Mission Integration (MI) Regional Director. The training aimed to strengthen staff capacity to provide quality, person-centered services to the vulnerable populations served by the organization.

During the session, vulnerable populations were defined as children, elderly, people living with disabilities, and individuals who are ill or facing other forms of vulnerability. Participants explored the unique needs and challenges faced by these groups and the importance of responding with dignity, care, and understanding.

Compassionate service delivery was described as an approach grounded in empathy, respect, active listening, and a nonjudgemental attitude. These principles closely align with the values of Cabrini Ministries and their mission of restoring life within communities. Staff were encouraged to reflect on their own personal values and ensure they complement the organization’s values, thereby fostering a culture of compassion in all interactions with beneficiaries.

To support the practical application of compassionate care, several daily implementation strategies were discussed. These included building meaningful relationships with clients to better understand their experiences and needs, creating inclusive and welcoming environments where beneficiaries feel safe and comfortable sharing their concerns, and strengthening teamwork and collaboration across departments to ensure integrated and holistic support services.

The training also highlighted the importance of self-care for staff members. Recognizing that working closely with vulnerable populations can be emotionally demanding, participants were encouraged to identify healthy ways to debrief, manage stress, and maintain their own wellbeing. The facilitator emphasized that staff can only effectively care for others when they also care for themselves.

The session concluded with a reminder that compassionate service delivery should not only reflect the values of Cabrini Ministries but also the Christian principles upon which the organization is founded. By embodying empathy, respect, and care in their daily work, staff can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the individuals and communities they serve.
